Episode Summary[]
Steve and Meredith walk in on Alison and Chris kissing in the staffroom, Alison rushes out. Steve is snarky to Chris then complains about him to Meredith. Carrie interrupts and says Steve will be helping Chris today, to Steve’s annoyance, and Meredith tells Carrie about Chris and Alison.
Jenny and Michael discuss his cranio-facial unit proposal for the hospital. Michael tells Jenny that Nick’s not been showing up for his shifts at the gym, the job Michael got him.
Alison is making up a bed in an exam room. Carrie says she’s been on to the cleaners to do it and Alison shouldn’t let people take advantage of her. Alison says she doesn’t mind, but Carrie says she meant it about Chris, and she thinks Alison could do better. Alison says Chris has another side to him.
Michael asks Chris to be on the cranio-facial team. Chris doubts his abilities but Michael encourages him, and slyly suggests he could offer his spot to Meredith instead. Chris immediately accepts the offer.
Nick tells Gina about a band audition he has, while she practices her German. She asks Nick how he’ll keep his job and play in a band, and he says he’ll quit working at the gym. He agrees to mind the coffee shop while Gina visits the clinic.
Jenny congratulates Chris and says his father will be proud, Chris is less sure but he’ll find out at dinner with him tonight. Gina tries to convince Steve to give Klaus some bratwurst sausage for her, but is interrupted by Jenny who wants to buy a newspaper. Gina says Nick is minding the coffee shop, and Jenny rushes off to find him. Gina asks Carrie if Klaus can be made more comfortable, and Carrie curtly says no.
Meredith makes some snide remarks about Chris’s “conquests”, before he tells her about Michael’s offer. Meredith is furious, says Michael “practically offered me the job last week” and complains about the “boys club”.
Jenny confronts Nick about not being at work. He tells her about the audition and she thinks he’s being foolish. Nick yells at Jenny and accuses her of only caring about Michael’s feelings, then storms off.
Steve and Meredith badger Alison about Chris being no good. She goes off on them, saying she doesn’t need to be coddled, and maybe she’ll get to know Chris even better.
Gina runs into Carrie in the clinic corridor, dropping magazines she brought for Klaus. Carrie points out they are in Dutch, not German, but tells Gina Klaus will still appreciate the effort.
Carrie speaks to Chris and calls Alison “another notch on [his] belt”. Chris demands to know where she heard that, and when Steve walks up, angrily blames him.
Nick bombs his audition.
Chris talks to Alison about the gossip, and we find out Alison lied about spending the night with him. Instead she slept in an exam room, the one she was tidying earlier. Chris says she’s welcome to spend the night anytime, she might as well if everyone already thinks she has.
Chris apologises to Meredith for snatching the new position, and clears up the Alison rumour. Meredith’s feather’s are still ruffled and Chris suggests she’s jealous. Meredith says he only got the job because of his surname, and reveals Chris’s dad will be on the hospital board responsible for accepting or rejecting the proposal. Chris wasn’t aware of this.
Steve apologises to Alison, promising not to interfere again. She forgives him.
Chris has dinner with his father, Bruce Warner. He avoids telling Bruce about Michael’s offer, and they fight over Bruce wanting more for him than his job at the clinic. Bruce offers to train Chris as a heart surgeon if he leaves Shortland Street. Chris suggests he’s just trying to get back at Michael. Bruce says Shortland Street is “considered a joke in the medical community”, he’s not worried about Michael, and offers Chris a “very attractive package”.
Michael blows off dinner with Jenny for a meeting with board members. He asks about Nick and offers to talk to him about the band thing, Jenny says he wouldn’t be very receptive.
Chris tells Bruce he’s thankful for what he’s done for him but doesn’t want to be his “puppet”. Bruce says Chris just wants to put “a slur” on the Warner name, and gets furious when Chris suggests his grandfather already did that. Chris says Bruce has no belief in his abilities and storms off, passing Michael on the way out. Michael talks up Chris to Bruce, mentioning his cranio-facial offer. Bruce says that would be a bad idea, and tells Michael he should fire Chris.
