Steve Mills is a fictional character on Shortland Street who first appeared in 1992. Portrayed by Andrew Binns.
Biography[]
Steve worked as a nurse at Shortland Street. He was a goofy, comedic character, often getting into trouble with his friends and colleagues through pranks, jokes and hare-brained schemes to make money. Steve had a big heart though and was always there to help his friends when they needed him, even if he sometimes bumbled his way through it.
Storylines[]
Steve was part of an emotional storyline with his girlfriend Sarah Donnelly. While they were together Sarah was diagnosed with cancer, and after a birthday party Steve lovingly threw for her, she ended up dying in his arms in the back garden.
Death[]
At Gina and Leonard’s farewell party, Steve was reeling from a devastating discovery. He had just learned that he wasn’t the biological father of Carrie’s triplets, a truth that came to light when one of the babies, Sarah, needed a rare blood transfusion. Steve, ready to step in and help take the blood from said patient, walked into the hospital room only to find Chris already there. That’s when the pieces clicked: the triplets shared Chris’s rare blood type. Chris was their real father.
Heartbroken but still devoted to the children, Steve confronted Chris. But Chris brushed it off, coldly insisting he didn’t care about the triplets and wouldn’t stand in Steve’s way if he wanted to raise them. Steve tried to move on, but at Gina’s party, he spotted something that shattered him all over again, a photo of the triplets, carefully tucked into Chris’s wallet. The truth was undeniable. Chris did care, he just didn’t want to admit it.
Later that afternoon, Steve, Chris, Kirsty, and TP piled into the iconic yellow car. Emotions boiling over, Steve behind the wheel finally confronted Chris about the photo. The argument grew heated, and in a split second of rage and heartbreak, Steve turned to face Chris in the backseat, losing control of the vehicle. The car veered off the road and down a steep bank.
Chris was thrown clear from the crash, needing spinal surgery. Kirsty escaped too. But TP was unconscious, trapped in the wreckage. Without hesitation, Steve raced back to pull her free but just as he reached her, the car exploded in a ball of fire. Both Steve and TP were killed instantly.
